Field investigations (Major Research Expeditions):

1962. June-August.
Research voyage on the R/V Miklukho-Maclay of the Odessa Branch, IBSS in the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov and Caspian Sea. Objectives: comparative biological and biochemical investigations (plankton, neuston, bentos) with special attention for pontian (caspian) relics.
1965. June.
Research voyage on the R/V Academician A. Kovalevsky of the IBSS (Sebastopol) in the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic coast of Cuba. Objectives: neuston, plankton, benthos and radioecological investigations. The biocoenisis of floating (hyponeustonic) Sargassum weeds was investigated.
1968. September-October.
Research voyage on the R/V Academician A. Kovalevsky of the IBSS (Sebastopol), the Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar area of the Atlantic. Objectives: neuston and its radioecology.
1973. August-September.
Research voyage on the R/V Miklukho-Maclay of the Odessa Branch, IBSS in the North-Western Black Sea. Objectives: chemical and biological investigations. First case of mass mortality of benthic organisms because of bottom hypoxia into the Black Sea was discovered.
1975. June-July.
Research voyage on the R/V Miklukho-Maclay of the Odessa Branch, IBSS in the Black Sea. Objectives: eutrophication process and its consequences for the plankton, neuston, benthos, and fish. Enlargement of phytoplankton blooming zones in the NW Black Sea was detected.
1979. June-July.
Research voyage on the R/V Miklukho-Maclay of the Odessa Branch, IBSS in the Western Black Sea. Objectives: chemical and biological investigations. Decline in neustonic crustacean and fish populations because of the surface microlayer pollution was detected. Degradation of the Zernov's Phyllophora field on the NW shelf, because of decline in water transparency was observed.
1981. May, July.
Research voyage on the R/V Miklukho-Maclay of the Odessa Branch, IBSS in the Black Sea, the Egean Sea, and the Adriatic Sea. Objectives: comparative studies of plankton, neuston and benthos with special attention to the low salinity areas in the NW Black Sea and the NW Adriatic Sea. Decline in neustonic copepods Pontellidae populations both in the NW Black Sea and the NW Adriatic Sea was registered. In the Black Sea at 600-800 m depth in the anaerobic zone and presence oving Nematodes were discovered.
1984. April-May.
Research voyage on the R/V Vityaz of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology (Moscow) in the Black Sea. Objectives: plankton, neuston, water chemistry, and bottom observations from the research submersible Argus. A sharp decline of the Zernov's Phyllophora field on the NW shelf was detected.
1986. August.
Research voyage on the R/V Professor Vodianitsky of the IBSS (Sebastopol) in the NW Black Sea. Objectives: research on sulphur bacteria, macro- and meiobenthos. Living Nematodes at 500-600 m depth in the anaerobic zone were detected.
1988. February-March.
Research voyage on the ship Amur, operated by the Institute of Hydrobiology (Kiev) in the Danube River from the delta till Vienna. Objectives: chemical and biological investigations of water and bottom sediments of the Danube- the main source of eutrophication and pollution of the Black Sea.
1992. August.
Research voyage on the R/V Sprut of the Odessa Branch, IBSS in the NW Black Sea bays Egorlyk and Tendra. Objectives: environmental assessment of shallow-water bays as feeding grounds of young fishes. Large amounts of young turbot, gobies, and grey mullet were observed. First epineustonic insect in the Black Sea (Clunio ponticus, Diptera, Chironomidae) was observed and described.
1994. September.
Research voyage on the R/V Sprut of the Odessa Branch, IBSS in the Danube delta and the Zhebriansky Bay. Objectives: environmental assessment of shallow-water marine and brackish-water areas as feeding grounds of fishes. In the predeltaic area were observed many young fishes (sturgeons, gobies, fresh-water Cyprinidae) and ichthyophagous birds feeding on it (pelicans, cormorants, gulls).
1997. June-July.
First land-based hydrobiological expedition in the coastal waters of the Zmeiny Island (Snake Island) in the Black Sea. Objectives: plankton, neuston, benthos, and ichthyological researches in island's coastal zone, which is inaccessible for ship's investigations. Many specimens of the Red Data Book crabs species and other organisms were observed. The phenomenon of "island's gigantism" among marine invertebrate and fish was noted.
